CONSERVING THE REGENTS GALLERY CARPET

The general pile condition of the carpet in the Regents Gallery at Belvoir Castle is good throughout. The base is brittle in places where the jute has deteriorated. In some areas the joins are weak or have split. There is evidence of moth activity and damage in areas beneath the curtains, particularly at one end of the room. Creases and folds have appeared where the natural slight movement of the carpet in use has been restrained by heavy furniture and sculptures.

With your donations the damaged areas on the carpet and the areas where past repairs are no longer stable, would be conserved onto a support fabric using a couching stitch to hold everything in place. Where the support fabric will be visible it would be dyed to match the carpet.
